Does anyone have any information about Bernard Tolan who worked in the textile industry back in the mid-1950s. He and his family emigrated to Australia in 1958

The shipping lists confirm the marriage and children you found, Judith.

The family set sail from Southampton 16 August 1957 on board the SS New Australia of the Shaw Savill & Albion Line,
arriving Fremantle 12 September 1957 before continuing to Melbourne and 16, Swinburne Street North Geelong. Details here.

May be worth following up these births:
Bernard Tolan, birth registered December quarter 1919 in Halifax; mother's maiden name Murphy.
Constance Gilboy, birth registered March quarter 1929 in Halifax; mother's maiden name Gomersall.

Judith and John, thank you so much for the information. This will help with my wife's family tree. Would you know how I would find out about Bernard working in Huddersfield? Regards, Wayne

Birth, marriage, death and census records show your Tolans lived in the Halifax area from at least the 1880s to the 1950s;
so unless your records indicate otherwise, it is more likely Bernard worked in that area rather than in Huddersfield.

His marriage to Constance Gilboy was registered in Halifax, 1948, September quarter, Volume 2b, Page 1664.
The births of their children were all registered in Halifax:
Kathleen - 1950, December quarter, Volume 2b, Page 782.
Eileen - 1953, March quarter, Volume 2b, Page 724.
Timothy - 1954, September quarter, Volume 2b, Page 720.
Frances - 1957, June quarter, Volume 2b, Page 772.

To get an idea of what Bernard did for a living you could purchase copies of the marriage and birth certificates.
They would give you snapshots of his occupation from the age of 28 to 37.
If you order directly from the official government website, quoting the full GRO Index References as above,
the cost will be 9.25 UK Pounds (or equivalent currency) per certificate to anywhere in the world.

Are you aware Bernard had an elder brother, Thomas?
He was born in 1914 and married Eva Duggan in 1943. They had two boys, Paul in 1945 and Glyn in 1948.
On 25 September 1952, the family sailed from Liverpool bound for Australia on board MV Cheshire, arriving in Fremantle on 27 October. Details here.
Thomas was a carpenter, and the family were Ten Pound Poms.

Their stated destination was WA; but did they later move to VIC I wonder? Bernard's stated destination five years later was an address in Geelong.
