Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me please? I'm currently researching a family called Swallow, my direct ancestor being Joseph Swallow who was christened on 25 March 1656 in Bradfield, Sheffield. Joseph's father is recorded as being Richard Swallow but I have found no record of Richard in Bradfield prior to this date. However, there is a record of Richus Swallow being christened in Almondbury on 9 August 1629. I have also found a record that Joseph's mother was Grace Blackburne, and records of Gracia Blackburne being christened on 22 February 1628 at St Peter's in Huddersfield, Gracia Swallow (father Johnis Blackburne, mother Sibelle Swallow) on 17 August 1628 at St Peter's in Huddersfield and Gracia Blagburn on 16 March 1633 at St Peter's in Huddersfield. A Richardus Swallow and Gracia Blackburne are recorded as being married in Almondbury on 18 July 1654 with the marriage of a Richardus Swallowe and Grace Blagburne being dedicated at St Peter's in Huddersfield on 25 July 1654. If anyone has any information regarding the Swallows or Blackburn families in Almondbury or Huddersfield, I'd be grateful if they could post a reply. Thank you. Jacquie

There is a baptism in Huddersfield of Edmund Swallow, son of Richard Swallow on 20 April 1656 which seems to me to rule out this family as being yours. There are some later baptisms in 1663 and 1668 also.
I see from the IGI that a John Swallow was baptising children in Bradfield 1632 to 1650. I don't see a Richard but there was a Joseph in 1646. John would seem the most likely candidate to me.

Thank you Stu. I have found records of baptisms in Bradfield of what appear to be Joseph's siblings so it does seem to rule out the Richard in Huddersfield. Jacquie

Hi Jacqie-If you can get to Bradfield they have an extensive archive of ancient records as well as the usual Parish baptisms etc. Check their web site. I think they open on a Thursday afternoon.- Ian

Hello Ian - I have picked a couple of things up from Bradfield online but not got round to actually going. Sounds like it will be worth it from your post, so I will get myself in gear! Thank you. Jacquie

On my ancestor David Haigh's marriage in Kirkburton, although living in Cartworth, in 1786, there are two witnesses, one being a Richard Swallow. I have never traced the family. (Part of Holmfirth is in the Almondbury Parish. Not sure if this is of help)
